Jim Van Tuinen, Owner Van Tuinen Painting, Inc.

JVT

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, attended the Grand Rapids Christian Schools, Calvin College and Western Michigan University. In 1972, I graduated from WMU with a Bachelors Degree.

One of my first summer jobs was on the painting crew at Calvin College. Eventually, I began contracting painting on my own. I discovered I enjoyed the work but even more enjoyed running a small business.

Upon graduating from WMU, I “officially” started a painting business. Building the business, earning the trust of our customers, providing a living to my employees and building a superior reputation in Kalamazoo has been rewarding. The challenges are far out-weighed by the satisfaction I receive from managing Van Tuinen Painting, Inc.

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart, Jane, a retired public school teacher, for 42 years. Our son, Matt, is married to Tricia, and they live in Chicago with their three children. Our daughter, Lindsey, is married to Drew and they also have three children.

In my free time I enjoy golf and racquetball and I’m an avid reader. Jane and I enjoy traveling and spending time with our six grandchildren.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 39 years since I started Van Tuinen Painting. I’ve never stopped working to improve our company’s operation and the quality of service we provide.

Shelly Sutter, Office Manager

Shelly-Sutter

I’m an accounting professional with 15+ years of experience in accounting, human resources and payroll. I was hired by Van Tuinen Painting in October, 2003. As the Office Manager, I am responsible for answering phones, setting up appointments, typing proposals, human resources, marketing and all aspects of accounting (accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, cash flow, payroll, financial reports, etc.).

I was raised in Mendon and attended Mendon High School. I graduated from Grand Valley State University in May, 1992 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management.

My husband Steve and I have two daughters — Julia and Sarah. They are both excellent students and very active in sports. We also have two dogs — a goldendoodle named Rudy and a blind labradoodle named Shadow. If I get any spare time, I like reading and gardening.

I have enjoyed working at Van Tuinen Painting for the past 10 years. The work is challenging and I enjoy taking on new tasks to improve the operations of the company. My co-workers are a great group of guys and are the best painters you could ask for.

Nick Barber, Assistant Manager

Nick-Barber

My name is Nick Barber and I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I have been painting for twelve years, nine of which have been with Van Tuinen Painting. The things I love about my job are making the customer happier about their home or business and the satisfaction of making something better than it had previously been. I pride myself in my attention to detail and always making sure the job is done correctly before I leave the jobsite.

I’ve lived in Kalamazoo my entire life and will probably never move, as most of my family is here. I have a beautiful wife and two boys — Noah and Wyatt. I love spending time with my family and couldn’t ask for anything more. In my spare time I enjoy golf, bowling, fishing, camping, disc golf, and I am also an avid hunter. I enjoy working on and driving my Camaro when I get some free time. Hopefully, I have given you an idea about myself as far as my family, job and hobbies. I look forward to meeting you and making your home or business better.
