One of the most common projects is a kitchen remodel, which usually involves replacing appliances, surfaces, and – of course – painting. But, what should you do to prepare your kitchen for this endeavor? How can you make the job easier on yourself or, if you’re getting help from a professional, the team that you’ve hired?
1. Clean the walls
Before painting, you – or the team you’ve hired – should thoroughly scrub and clean the walls of your kitchen with clean, clear water and an appropriate cleaning agent. Be sure to take note of and remove any mold or mildew stains, especially around molding, near appliances, or on backsplashes. Once you’ve completed this, be sure to let the surfaces dry, as painting over wet walls can cause peeling, blistering, and other problems that will require touch ups later.
2. Cover the surfaces
When we do kitchen painting, we’re careful to cover all surfaces, appliances, and areas that won’t be receiving paint. During the painting process, it’s very easy for stray drips and drops to find their way onto unprotected areas. Because of this, you want to be extremely thorough and take caution. If possible, remove smaller appliances to another room and use plastic sheeting and masking tape to cover unmoveable surfaces and appliances.
3. Patch damaged areas
The best time to patch damage to your walls is before an interior painting project. Filling nail holes, smoothing scratches, and other small damage can be easily repaired with patching compound and a drywall sanding sponge. Ensuring that all of these tiny imperfections are dealt with prior to painting will ensure a durable, long-lasting, and professional finish.
